Created between 2015 and 2021, Carriage Bearance Severance constitutes a trilogy of performances by Matty Davis and Ben Gould that mark the trajectory of a relationship forged by shifting need, desire, and growth. Davis and Gould’s work together began as an investigation of reliance, control, and care. Saturated by surgery, healing, friendship, and mutual learning, this research delineated new bounds of freedom and possibility. What could be shared, reciprocated, and endured, however, was soon transfigured by both personal and global contexts that fostered questions regarding separateness, autonomy, and new forms of radical empathy. As physical and emotional worlds evolve, all is remembered yet actively growing.

“One of the most profound experiences in contemporary performance. Frustration, desolation, sadness and love are embodied in a wide-ranging programmatic structure both rawly virtuosic and tastefully sparse. Truly stunning physicalities . . . create moments of austere isolation that are subsumed into a vital emotional unity.”
– Clifford Allen, Director of Archives, Watermill Center, NYC

“An extraordinary, riveting performance that viscerally explores the limits of physical endurance and mutual cooperation. It should not be missed!”
– Dan Cameron, Senior Curator, Next Wave Visual Art at the Brooklyn Academy of Music; Prospect New Orleans
