CPR 2021 Artist-in-Residence J. Bouey organizes a virtual Open Studios that gives a peek into the creative processes of angel edwards, Jayson P. Smith, and Janae Williams/juh weems/fatblackclit as they explore the ‘captive maternal’ (coined by Joy James), love and care during Black death, interrogating the ruptures that global anti-Blackness creates, and birthing self and others (obligatory and otherwise). The showings of each artists' work will be followed by a conversation with curator J. Bouey where they will share more about their creative processes, and what informs them.
Open Studios is a series of work-in-progress showings held regularly throughout the year, and serves as an incubator for new work, inviting the public into the artistic process. Each installment is curated by an invited guest, usually someone close to the CPR family, and features a diverse group of artists, performance-makers, choreographers, and dancers. Each Open Studios culminates in a conversation with the artists and organizers, where audiences are invited and encouraged to share their feedback.
Closed captioning will be provided, and ASL interpretation may be provided, upon request, and with at least two weeks’ advance notice, by emailing remi@cprnyc.org.
