URBAN / TRIBE
was founded by Mathew James Talaugon as a means to foster an artistic community influenced by principles and values present in tribal life. Mathew James is an enrolled tribal member of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians.

As a queer and Native artist, Mathew James Talaugon draws upon his complex identity, ancestry, and heritage to investigate contemporary culture through his unique life perspective. By galvanizing the body’s potential, Mathew crafts cinematic experiences through valorous physicality and visceral emotional grit.

PAST FORWARD wrestles with the anxious and endless search to feel complete. The dance theater work takes both the performers and the viewers on a vision quest examining notions of inherited trauma and the desire to undo the past in hopes of shaping a new future.

Artistic Director and Choreographer: Mathew James Talaugon

Collaborators: Isabelle Dayton, Ryan Fish, Savannah Gaillard, Jamie Kleinschnitz, Tyler McNair, Graziella Murdocca, Erke Rosen
