This event will take place in-person at CPR and also via live-stream. Participants can engage in discussion from both platforms.

Organized with Wendy’s Subway, a non-profit reading room, writing space, and independent publisher located in Bushwick, this gathering of the Performance Philosophy Reading Group is hosted by JJJJJerome Ellis, whose forthcoming book, The Clearing, published by Wendy's Subway, launches November 5, 2021. Ellis will lead a discussion based on this new publication, as well as chapter one of Scenes of Subjection by Saidiya Hartman.

JJJJJerome Ellis is a blk disabled animal, stutterer, and artist. Through music, literature, performance, and video, he explores blkness, disabled speech, and music as forces of refusal, possibility, reparation, and healing.

Readings and materials will be shared with participants who RSVP, in advance of the program.

Closed captioning will be provided on the virtual platform.

In Performance Philosophy Reading Group we read exhilarating and thought-provoking texts as a springboard into generative discussion and thought-experimentation. Each gathering is hosted by a special guest, who engages the texts in whatever way seems most productive, and participants are encouraged to bring their own perspectives to the discussion.

Important note regarding Covid-19: The safety of CPR’s artists, visitors, and staff is our top priority. In accordance with the NYC mandate, documentation showing proof of full vaccination against Covid-19 (at least 14 days after final dose) will be required to enter CPR. A physical or photocopy of your vaccination card or NYS Excelsior Pass will be acceptable. CPR may also require masks or social distancing, at its sole discretion.
