OPEN LAB

OPEN LAB invites artists and scholars to facilitate theoretical discussions and embodied workshops, providing a platform for practice-based inquiry and creative exchange.

In discussion-based programs – previously under the umbrella of ‘Performance Philosophy Reading Group’ and developed in conjunction with international research network, Performance Philosophy – facilitators may choose a text, artwork, concept, material or body of work connected to their artistic practice. Participants are encouraged to read and engage with the material in advance, and to bring their own questions, ideas, and experiences to the group. These programs often take place virtually to enhance accessibility.

In-person workshops will engage participants in embodied practices centered around the facilitator’s own artistic practice. These programs often take the form of skill-sharing (e.g. knitting, trick lasso), or engage the group in a research-based experiment, which may inform the development of an artist’s work.

Public programs at CPR are supported by Dance/NYC’s New York City Dance Rehearsal Space Subsidy Program made possible by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, The Harkness Foundation for Dance, Howard Gilman Foundation, Mertz Gilmore Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature, and public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

Charlotte’s Fund was formed in 2020 to support Performance Philosophy Reading Group (the catalyst for OPEN LAB programs) and in honor of former CPR Executive Director Charlotte Farrell who initiated the program. If you would like to contribute to Charlotte’s Fund, you can make a donation to Center for Performance Research and note “Charlotte’s Fund” in the memo.
